Vertigo diagnosis

Posted by: Dave  :  Category: Vertigo Information

Your doctor will diagnose vertigo based upon a description of the symptoms. It may also be necessary to examine your ears, eye movements and nervous system to find out the cause of your Vertigo.

It may be necessary to conduct more specific tests if your Vertigo is severe or ongoing. Your doctor can carry out what is called a provocation test. This involves placing your head in various positions to bring on the dizziness, and is also used to diagnose benign positional vertigo. Another simple test that can be done is to

stand still and close your eyes. If your balance is affected, it may indicate a problem in your middle ear.

Your doctor can also conduct a caloric test, in which air at different temperatures is blown into your ear to check that your inner ear is working correctly. Your neck may also be X-rayed if arthritis of the neck is suspected by your doctor.

If you also have tinnitus, the doctor may advise you to have a CT or MRI scan of the brain to rule out a brain tumour.

Hi there, I would like to seek some feedback.

I experienced vertigo during my diving trips and experienced it underwater. There were 2 occasions that I experienced vertigo separately over the span of 3 days and 6 dives.

The first incident was when I started moving after staying stagnant in 1 place momentarily. Upon moving a few feet, I started seeing the surrounding spinning and it lasted about a few seconds. Upon experiencing it, I stopped moving and looked down at one of the rocks underwater and the dizziness sensation starts to fade away.

The second incident happened also underwater when I started kicking fast to move in front quickly to see something that the divemaster pointed to. Upon reaching, the surrounding started to spin again. When I did the same thing of looking down at a rock, the vertigo went away after a few seconds.

May I know whether what is the possible cause for my vertigo incidents?

Thank you for those who wrote in with their symtoms.

Mine seemed so odd. I didn’t know what was wrong with me.

I went to the GP. They said Vertigo and prescribed meclizine.

I’m really scared to do anything until I see the
    ENT doctor next week.

I had just gotten up and the pain came from the back of the head on the right side. It shot through to the eye. The room spun in a circle on the right eye only. Felt like there was no control or loose or something. Now the eye is tight with little movement to the right. A piercing in the right ear. Like a needle poking through. I used ice on the back of my head on the right.

The headache I assume was a migrane. It stayed with me all day.

I’m miserable. I’ve been in and out of work all week. Don’t feel like doing anything and noise and lights really bother me.

Where’s Dr. Kavorkian when you need him…

    Hi,
My wife had nausea and vomiting 2 times in last 4 years. It came and went away in 2-3 days. Now, she had same thing again. We went to physician, and doc diagnosed it a vertigo and prescribe anti-vert (meclizine). Doc didn’t do any lab test or something. Doc just checked her, looked at her condition.
It doesn’t seem to help much. She is still having it once in a while, though frequency is very less, It is not going away completely. She generally starts having it after waking up in morning.
Do you recommend seeing a specialist, like ENT or neuro-surgeon?
How long does it take to cure vertigo? Is it completely curable? Please any response will help.

Vertigo is hereditary…my grandmother, and mom and me all get it to varying degrees – my sisters do not get it.
I am a teacher and I get it more often in the summer – when I sleep in…
I don’t sleep late as much as I would like to any more, but it is better than having the room spinning.
Dehydration can also bring on vertigo. So, everybody drink plenty of water and keep regular sleep patterns. Good luck!
