Causes of Vertigo
Any condition that directly affects the brain can cause vertigo. The two most common causes of vertigo are inner ear infection or a condition called called Meniere’s disease. Both of these conditions are caused by fluid building up in the inner ear. The ear sends a message to the brain that the person is moving, while the eyes send a different message. The brain gets confused by the two conflicting messages, and doesn’t know what to do. This is what causes dizziness and motion sickness.
Another common cause of vertigo is dehydration, which often follows with nausea and vomiting or diarrhea. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish vertigo caused by inner ear problems and vertigo caused by dehydration, because they both often cause nausea and
vomiting. Any sufferers of vertigo that feel their vertigo worsening as they change position should be seen by a physician. If left untreated, dehydration can lead to shock and inner ear problems can lead to a loss of hearing. One of the simplest and easiest ways to remember other causes of vertigo is to use the mnemonic AEIOU TIPS:
- A – alcohol
- E – epilepsy or exposure (heat stroke, hypothermia)
- I – insulin (diabetic emergency)
- O – overdose or oxygen deficiency (shortness of breath, hyperventilation)
- U – uremia (toxins due to kidney failure)
- T – trauma (head injury or shock)
- I – infection
- P – poisoning or psychosis
- S – stroke

I have had vertigo for the past 8 years, usually at night or when I am still in a sitting position. I have had a neck injury in 1999 and am thinking this has something to do with it. But also I am a smoker and my sister was a smoker and she has just had a stroke. I have a feeling she has had vertigo. I feel as I am going down the same path. I have a feeling this vertigo is the gradual shutdown of the arteries.; hardening of the arteries and blown out aortas and blood clots; which my sister is full of all of the above. Just getting a doctor to examine the real situation without laughing at you is another thing. But it is MY own fault through smoking of my own demise.. everyday I plan to quit….right!

How can you live with vertigo? I’ve experienced it a few times, and when I do I can’t stand up. Is there any way to help this?

for the love of pete, vertigo is a symptom, not a disease. There are medications that can treat it and it usually leaves you in bed for a few days while the meds take action. It can result from inner ear infections or could be a sign of other larger problems.

Woke up out of the blue to the room in super-drunk spin. (don’t drink) Could not stand up or walk, nausea, depth perception etc. I spent 6 days in the hospital had all imaginable tests Cat, MRI, EEG, blood work every day.etc. all were normal. no high blood pressure, the cholestral was not bad but not good 189, LDL 43 HDL 47 only bad thing. (not being a doctor I probably have the initials wrong – LDL is good right) yet I still have mild bouts of vertigo. Consulted ENT Dr. and found hearing loss and a possible healed inner ear infection. The thing here is that I have nothing to cure in the ear…still have the vertigo. Did the excercizes prescribed, still have it. This has all occurred withing the past 3 months. Suggestions welcomed as to what to try next. Is there a place that specializes in this?

Hi,
I am a Psycho patient and taking Mozep 2 mg & Pacitane 2 mg since 1998. My stomach is always upset because of indigestion. Since 3 months, I am feeling giddiness and it creates 2 or 3 minutes numbs from my left head to feet in standing & lying position. My blood pressure sometimes high but now is okay. My sugar is okay.
Please let me know what is happening with me. I am worried about it very much.
Thanks and best regards

I have had vertigo in the past and now have it again. Just started today – I’m going to research the gluten intolerance to see if that is the problem. I may be allergic to gluten (flour, wheat, barley, etc…) I have always suffered from tinnitis (ringing in the ears) and ear infections – I think due to allergies…
